ITIN vs. SSN vs. EIN: Which U.S. Tax ID Do Digital Nomads Actually Need?

By Yara Nazari ·

Most non-resident nomads cannot get an SSN. An ITIN handles personal tax reporting; an EIN unlocks U.S. LLC banking. Here is when to apply for each and what forms to use.

ITIN vs. SSN vs. EIN: Which U.S. Tax ID Do Digital Nomads Actually Need?

U.S. financial infrastructure runs on tax identifiers. Every form asks for one. Most guides assume you have a Social Security Number. Most nomads do not — and cannot get one.

Understanding which ID you actually need saves months of rejected applications.

SSN: When You Probably Cannot Get One

A Social Security Number is tied to legal U.S. work authorization. H-1B holders, green card holders, and certain visa categories qualify. A nomad billing U.S. clients from Lisbon on a tourist visa does not.

Common exception: F-1 or J-1 visa holders with authorized on-campus work, CPT, OPT, or approved internships may apply for an SSN through the standard SSA process.

If you are purely non-resident with no U.S. work authorization, plan around ITIN and EIN instead of chasing an SSN.

ITIN: Your Personal Tax Identifier

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is the IRS alternative for people who need to file or report U.S. tax matters but are ineligible for an SSN.

Use an ITIN when you need to:

  • Report U.S.-sourced income on Form 1040-NR
  • Claim tax treaty benefits on Schedule OI
  • Satisfy some bank or secured credit card applications
  • Respond when a U.S. client asks for a "tax ID" (often W-8BEN is enough instead)

Apply with IRS Form W-7. Processing times vary; start early if a deadline depends on it.

When a U.S. client requests an SSN for payment, you can often submit Form W-8BEN to certify non-resident status instead.

EIN: Your Business Identifier

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is for entities — typically a U.S. LLC or corporation — not personal identity.

Many nomads form a single-member U.S. LLC to organize freelance income and simplify business banking. The EIN is what Mercury, Relay, and Airwallex ask for during remote onboarding.

Applying without an SSN:

  1. Complete IRS Form SS-4
  2. Submit via fax (often 5–15 days), mail (4–6 weeks), or phone
  3. Use your foreign passport number as the responsible party identifier
  4. Apply directly through the IRS — third-party "EIN services" charge for something that is free

An EIN alone does not create U.S. tax liability. Liability depends on how the business is structured and where you perform work — a separate and more complex question.

Order of Operations

Tax IDs come after your communication foundation:

  1. Bank-friendly U.S. street address
  2. True mobile U.S. number for 2FA
  3. ITIN and/or EIN as needed
  4. Banking, brokerage, and credit applications

Applying for an ITIN before you have a stable U.S. address and phone number often creates more friction, not less.

AI is not a CPA

Tax rules for non-resident aliens differ sharply from resident filing. Use AI to parse forms only when your situation is simple. For LLC structure, Effectively Connected Income, or treaty claims, hire a qualified CPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a digital nomad get a U.S. Social Security Number?

Usually no. SSNs require U.S. work authorization from DHS. Working remotely from abroad or visiting on a tourist visa does not qualify. Exceptions exist for F-1/J-1 students with authorized employment.

What is an ITIN used for?

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number lets non-residents report U.S.-sourced income, claim treaty benefits, and satisfy some bank or credit applications. Apply with IRS Form W-7.

Can I get an EIN without an SSN?

Yes. Non-residents apply for an Employer Identification Number using Form SS-4 via fax, mail, or phone. Use your foreign passport as the responsible party identifier. IRS direct application is free.
